Do you want to unlock your Wii so you can play backup games, import games, homebrew, DVD movies and much more ?
My name’s Steve and I’ve been testing all the Wii Unlocking software I can find. It’s taken me a while, but I’ve made a shortlist of 6.
You can see my top choices of Wii Unlocker below – just click on them to read the individual reviews :
My recommended product to Wii Unlock !
HomeBreWare review.
“Unlock your Wii in minutes !”
BreWii review.
“The best Wii UNLOCKING Guide on the net” ?

If I have to pick a winner then HomebreWare just edges it – to have a look at the HomebreWare website then just click here.
Why am I writing this ? Well, I wanted to play Wii backups and imported games so I decided to look into how to unlock my Nintendo Wii on the net hoping that I could find some way to unlock my Wii without having to change any chips.
I found several Wii unlock products that looked promising, but there weren’t many decent reviews around of them so I decided to write one myself.
I’ve listed the full range of products I tested in an earlier post – if you want to have a look at what’s available you should have a look at this post.
I eventually settled on one Wii unlock utility produced by HomeBreWare and was so pleased with it I decided to write a review to help out anyone else who’s in the same situation
I’ll try to bring you both the good and bad points, but to be quite honest I’m struggling to find the bad ones !
HomebreWare good points
HomebreWare unlocks the following features on my Wii :
- I can play backup games and play imported games that are region locked.
- I can make copies of my existing games (or games borrowed from a friend !).
- I can play N64, SNES, NES and Sega Genesis games, as well as games from other consoles.
- I can unlock safely with NO hardware modifications or mod chips needed.
- I can play homebrew games, play DVD movies and Mp3 songs.
Installation onto my Wii console was a breeze – it comes with easy to follow instructions that even a 5 year old could follow !
However the main thing that clinches it for me (and I imagine for most people) is that is comes with a Homebreware Lifetime Membership, and all future upgrades are FREE – so it will be compatible with any Wii upgrades that are to come.
HomebreWare bad points
The only downside I can find is that some people may play illegally downloaded games (eg downloaded using torrents) but I’m not that type of person and I’m sure you’re not
Conclusions
To sum up I was a little sceptical at first that a software program would be as good as a mod chip. I’m pleased to say that with it’s low price, money back guarantee (which I forgot to mention – it comes with a 60 day no questions asked guarantee) and easy installation HomebreWare wins hands down !

I’ve investigated and it looks like this is going to be a bit more complex than I first thought ! I’ve found that there are SIX different brands of software available for Wii unlocking, and they are (if you want to check these out for yourself click on the links to visit the websites) :
HomebreWare
BreWii
Wii Unlocker Ultra
HomebrewInstaller
ConsoleUnlock
WiiUnlockPlus
They all appear pretty similar to be honest. The functions they offer that are common to all are :
- Unlock any Wii console worldwide without any hardware modification or modchip.
- Play backup games, downloaded games and play imported games that are region locked.
- Play N64, SNES, NES and Sega Genesis games, as well as games from other classic consoles.
- Play all homebrew applications and games including Wii Earth and Pong.
- Play DVD movies and Mp3 songs.
OK so they all meet the most important feature which is the ability to play backup and imported games without modchip or anything else that might damage your wii console.
So the next things I need to check out are how easy it is to install, how much it costs, are there free upgrades and how good is the customer support for these products.
